Max’s Place

Max’s Place

by Heather Round / Tuesday, 11 June 2013 / Published in Perspective

In memory of our beautiful boy Max Dennis Henry Round (HLHS).

In June 2002 our sons Henry and Max were born, our two beautiful boys. Max was diagnosed with an extremely serious congenital heart defect called Hypo Plastic Left Heart Syndrome. The boys were born in Adelaide, however the only place equipped to care for Max was Melbourne. Given the treatment Max would require we were informed that we would need to relocate to Melbourne for up to six months, (with the possibility of losing Max at any stage along the journey). Not only were we faced with the heartache of possibly losing our son but also we were faced with a serious financial burden of relocating and finding short term accommodation, (at a time where we both were on leave from our jobs to be with Max). Our amazing little man lost his battle at 13 days and we promised that his life would be forever remembered.

We cannot find a cure for HLHS so we thought that instead we could help other families in a similar position to us with the issue of accommodation whilst their child is receiving cardiac care at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Max’s Place is an apartment located directly opposite the Royal Children’s Hospital in North Melbourne, for the families of seriously ill children with cardiac conditions, to stay for the duration of their child’s treatment, at no ongoing out of pocket expense to the families. (Paying for only their first night of accommodation and a small cost for cleaning at the end of their stay.) Max’s Place is primarily for South Australian families. Max’s Place is only a one bedroom apartment but will be able to accommodate four to six people. It has a kitchen, bathroom and lounge, with access to a share laundry on each level of the apartment block. It also has its own car parking space.

For our dream to be fulfilled we will need to raise some funds and try to get some donations, to assist with the purchase of the property and to furnish the apartment, from family, friends and local businesses and individuals.

Any donations we receive will be greatly appreciated and acknowledged in our Max’s Place booklet.

Just wanted to thank you so much! Our daughter pyper has HLHS and we have stayed at max’s place twice now. What a god send! I don’t know how to thank you but we would not have been able to get through it. We are very very grateful.
